Getting delegates from IST and SAW to the venue
Both Istanbul airports have direct metro lines. From Istanbul Airport (IST), the M11 reaches Gayrettepe, one interchange from the Harbiye congress district, in about 30 minutes. From Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) on the Asian side, the M4 runs to Kadikoy in a 52-minute end-to-end journey. Below are the exact sequences, plus when to abandon the metro for coaches.
Route 1: IST to the Harbiye congress district
Follow metro signs inside the terminal
The M11 station is inside the airport complex; allow 15 to 20 minutes of walking from the gate after passport control and baggage. Buy an Istanbulkart at the machines before the turnstiles, since one card can pay for multiple riders.
Ride the M11 to Gayrettepe
Trains run from about 06:00 to midnight. The airport operator's transport page lists the line, and published timetables put IST to Gayrettepe at roughly 30 minutes.
Change to the M2 at Gayrettepe
Transfer to the M2 line southbound. Osmanbey station is the stop for the Harbiye congress valley; Taksim is one stop further. Door to door from the aircraft, plan 60 to 75 minutes.
Route 2: SAW to the European-side venues
Take the M4 from the terminal
The M4 station connects to the SAW terminal. Metro Istanbul's line page states a 52-minute full journey to Kadikoy with trains every 5 minutes at peak, running 06:00 to midnight.
Cross to the European side
From Kadikoy, the ferry to Karakoy or Besiktas is the fastest pleasant crossing; from Ayrilik Cesmesi station one stop earlier, the Marmaray rail tunnel crosses under the Bosphorus. Either way, add 30 to 45 minutes to reach Taksim or Harbiye.
Reconsider for evening arrivals
With luggage and a two-leg crossing, SAW to a European congress hotel takes around two hours by public transport. For speakers and VIPs landing at SAW, a booked car is the defensible choice.

When groups need coaches or cars instead
The metro works for individual delegates with one bag. It stops working for delegations arriving together, for anyone landing after midnight, and for VIP programs. For those cases organizers pre-book vehicles: sedans for speakers, vans or midibuses for delegations. Corporate airport transfers with meet-and-greet at both IST and SAW can be arranged through Transfelo, which handles name-board pickup and flight tracking, useful when a keynote's flight slips 40 minutes.
Taxis exist at both airports with regulated meters; expect 45 to 90 minutes to central districts depending on traffic, and significantly longer at the 08:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 peaks. For a wider guide to IST itself, including terminal layout and arrivals flow, see istanbulairport.org.
Venue-by-venue notes
Harbiye venues (ICC, Lutfi Kirdar): M2 Osmanbey station, then a short walk; coaches unload on Darulbedai Street by the congress valley. Halic Congress Center: no metro at the door, so plan shuttles from Sisli or Taksim hotels, typically 20 to 30 minutes each way outside peaks. Istanbul Expo Center at Yesilkoy: M1A light metro serves the fairgrounds area and the site sits just off the D100 highway, convenient for coaches from airport-belt hotels. Full venue profiles are in the congress centers guide, and hotel positioning is covered in the hotels guide.
Planner's defaults
Delegates: metro plus Istanbulkart. Speakers and VIPs: pre-booked car. Delegations of 10 plus: midibus with a named meeting point.
After midnight both metro lines are closed; only cars and night buses run.
